How to Properly Maintain a Window Sill

All windows attract dust, and when you add moisture and a few bugs to the mix, you end up with dirty window sills. Fortunately, it only takes a few household items and some patience to make your windows look like new again.

Proper Window Sill Cleaning Equipment

Before you begin cleaning your window sills, it’s important to make sure you have the proper equipment. Here are a few supplies you will need for sparkling clean window sills:

  • Bucket of warm water
  • Squirt of dish soap or vinegar
  • Clean cloth to wipe down window sills
  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Spray bottle filled with water

Getting Started

Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove as much dirt from the interior or exterior window sill as possible, including dirt, dust and dead bugs. It’s helpful to remove as much dirt as possible before you use water to clean. This will leave you with less grime to scrub. Once you have vacuumed all the dirt you can, it’s time to tackle the dirt in the corners and tracks. Add a drop of dish soap or vinegar to your spray bottle, and spray down the affected area. Both dish soap and vinegar can break down the dirt and dust and loosen it from your window sill. If you have a wooden window sill, use as little water as possible to avoid damage.

Using a damp cloth, wipe away the dirt. For hard-to-reach places, use a cotton swab to clean out the dust. Keep your bucket of warm water handy to rinse out your cloth, especially if your windows are incredibly dirty. If you still can’t remove all the dirt, use a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush to scrub away the grime. Be careful not to use too much force when brushing to avoid chipping the window sill paint.

Easy Window Sill Maintenance

Now that your window sills are clean, you’ll want to keep up with maintenance to avoid another big mess in the future. To keep them looking clean, it’s helpful to regularly dust your window sills. Keeping your windows dust-free will greatly decrease the grime buildup on the sills. If you start to accumulate dead bugs or dirt in your window, use the brush attachment on your vacuum to quickly sweep them up.
